From championing eye donation to global health initiatives, Aishwarya Rai inspires with a message of compassion, empathy, philanthropy and hope

Dubai, United Arab Emirates, November 27, 2024 – At the Global Women’s Forum Dubai on Wednesday, internationally acclaimed actress and cultural icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a moving address, urging the audience to embrace their role as agents of change in addressing global challenges like climate change, healthcare crises, and social inequalities. “Change is possible if we know it, embrace it, and act on it,” she said, emphasising the transformative power of empathy, philanthropy, and purposeful action.

Philanthropy begins with empathy

Speaking passionately about the causes she supports, Rai declared, “Philanthropy begins with empathy. It starts with an intention to help, a willingness to listen, and the courage to act.” She encouraged everyone to take small but meaningful steps, from mentoring youth to offering a kind word or supporting a cause. “Every little initiative counts and helps sow the seeds of change,” she affirmed.

Rai also highlighted the importance of instilling empathy and compassion in children, stating, “Our children must understand that compassion and empathy are essential to experiencing an ideal way of life.”

Advocacy for eye donation

As the brand ambassador for the Eye Bank Association of India, Rai passionately advocates for eye donation, calling it “an incredible way to bring light into another’s life.” She shared that one decision to donate eyes can transform lives, emphasising her commitment to promoting this life-altering cause.

Fighting cancer: A global health crisis

Rai brought attention to her work with cancer patients and organisations, underscoring the alarming statistics:

  • A 20–30% rise in global cancer cases over the last five years.
  • 10 million deaths annually attributed to cancer.
  • In India alone, 1.4 million new cases are reported each year, with this number projected to increase sharply by 2030.

“These numbers are not just statistics; they represent real lives,” she said, committing to raising awareness and providing hope to those impacted by the disease.

Transforming lives with Smile Train

Rai’s association with Smile Train, a global nonprofit providing free cleft surgeries, has contributed to over 1.5 million cleft surgeries worldwide. Praising the initiative’s impact, she said, “Meeting mothers whose tears of joy reflect their children’s transformation leaves an indelible mark.” Rai noted how these surgeries restore more than smiles—they rebuild confidence, improve speech, and ensure social inclusion.

Advancing HIV prevention as a UN AIDS Goodwill Ambassador

As a UN AIDS Goodwill Ambassador, Rai focuses on eliminating mother-to-child HIV transmission. She celebrated significant progress, including a 68% reduction in new infections among children since 2010, while urging continued efforts to combat stigma and ensure equitable healthcare access in underserved regions. “This is not just their struggle; it’s ours,” she declared.

A legacy rooted in kindness

Concluding her speech with a powerful call to action, Rai reminded the audience that the true measure of life lies in the legacy we leave behind. “Let us strive to leave behind a legacy of kindness, empathy, and hope. Let us be the reason someone out there believes in the goodness of humanity,” she said.
